It sold cheap stocks out of a onetime car dealership in Queens to potential investors over the telephone; when other investors noticed the spike in sales, and decided to buy a few shares, the price of the stock would rise, at which point Stratton Oakmont "would then dump their own stock, reaping vast and entirely illegal profits," explained Chris Ayres of the London Times .
